All Creatures star Nicholas Ralph’s childhood in South Africa

This Morning: Nicholas Ralph chats about upcoming series

Nicholas Ralph has starred as James Herriot in All Creatures Great and Small for three years, and the popular Channel 5 drama has won hearts across the nation. Express.co.uk has taken a look at Nicholas’ life before he joined the period drama, which is based on the books by veterinary legend Alf Wight.

Fans of the Channel 5 series are looking forward to the All Creatures Christmas special, which will air tonight. James Herriot (played by Nicholas Ralph) and Helen Herriot (Rachel Shenton) are expecting a baby together but are currently separated as James was called to War.

Since being married, the couple have started to plan their future and feel they need to leave Skeldale House. In the teaser for the upcoming festive episode, the pair have an emotional phone call which makes James determined to get back to her in time for the birth.

Most episodes are packed full of emotion, and it seems this year’s Christmas episode will also move fans. Will James be able to find his way home in time for Christmas?

Back at Skeldale House, Mrs Hall (Anna Madeley) prepares a community Christmas celebration to try to lift the spirits of locals during the festive period.

Nicholas’ life behind-the-scenes is of course very different to his All Creatures character’s background, but there are a few small similarities.

Nicholas grew up in the Scottish Highlands and speaks with a strong Scottish accent, however he wasn’t actually born in the country.

He was actually born in and spent his early childhood in Cape Town, South Africa.

However, he also spent a lot of time across the pond as he has family in the southern US states.

The 33-year-old moved with his family to Nairn, Scotland, when he was young and Nicholas was a huge football fan.

As a youngster, Ralph played association football from primary school until he was 15, and later he went on to play for Nairn County’s under-19 team.

Interestingly, Nicholas grew up surrounded by farm animals.

Living in the Scottish Highlands, livestock was all around him and he once told PBS.org: “When we were little kids, the farmer would lift us onto the back of one cow and take us the length of the garden.

“We named her Friendly because she wasn’t scared of us, which is quite sweet.

“Other times there were cows that actually broke out and they’d be in your garden, munching the flowers.”

Nicholas studied drama at Inverness College and later the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

After graduation in 2017, he worked at a live-in theatre for almost a year, and his first leading role came in a play called Interference.

Nicholas’ audition for All Creatures came a couple of years after his graduation, and he had to undertake training in vet procedures in order to keep the accuracy in the show as on-point as possible.

All Creatures Great and Small: Christmas Special will be on Thursday 21st December at 9pm on Channel 5 and My5.
