Dame Barbara Windsor is best known for her role as Peggy Mitchell in the BBC One soap EastEnders. The 82-year-old actress was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s six years ago and the Carry On legend was placed in a residential care home in July after her condition worsened.
Lacey Turner, who plays Stacey Slater in the BBC soap, has opened up about being in contact with Dame Barbara’s husband Scott Mitchell.
The small-screen star revealed that she hasn’t physically seen her former co-star but gets regular updates from Dame Barbara’s other half.
The Stacey Slater star admitted she tries to speak with Scott every week to check up on her colleague and friend.
Speaking in a new interview, the soap star spoke candidly about Barbara’s health.

“I haven’t seen her in a while but I speak to Scott [Mitchell] each week,” Lacey explained.
She added to OK! magazine: “She has a lot of friends at EastEnders who care about her and he fills us in on how she’s doing.”
The news of their phone calls comes after it was revealed that Dame Barbara’s condition had worsened during lockdown and as a result she was placed into a care home mid-July.
Her husband Scott explained that he had been an “emotional rollercoaster” and was in tears following their decision to place the actress into care.
“I feel I’m on an emotional rollercoaster. I walk around, trying to keep busy, then burst into tears. It feels like a bereavement,” Scott admitted.
He added: “It’s always been my biggest fear, that one day I would have to take her somewhere and she’d be thinking, ‘Why would he do this to me?’
“That fear has become a reality. It’s something I never wanted.”
Scott spoke candidly to The Sun about Dame Barbara’s move into a care home as he spoke of his heartache.

“By the time I got home and went to bed, I just felt desperately sad.”
He continued: “It’s been 27 years since we met and we spent so much of that time in each other’s company. It feels like another chapter has gone.”

Elsewhere, Lacey recently announced she is expecting her second child with husband Matt Kay.
