But way before that, Naagin was a trend on the big screen. Famous A-listers, some of whom went on to be regarded as legends, have played the role of the shape-shifting serpent on the big screen. You may poke fun as to why so much fuss is there about Naagins, but it has a different vibe to it, and we have a rich history about the same as well. Sridevi

Back in 1986, late actress Sridevi played the role of a Naagin on the big screen. Remember, main teri dushman, dushman tu mera? Yes, that iconic Sridevi’s song! Sridevi’s portrayal of Naagin earned her critical and commercial acclaim. To date, Naagin is considered to be one of her finest performances. And interestingly, it was also one of the highest-grossing films of the year.

Reena Roy

Reena Roy played the role of a Naagin back in 1976. It was very loosely inspired by François Truffaut’s French film, The Bride Wore Black, which was based on Cornell Woolrich’s novel of the same name. Remember the song, Tere sang pyaar main nahi todna, which was played in Ekta Kapoor’s Naagin 3? The song originally featured in this movie.

Meenakshi Seshadri

Meenakshi Seshadri played the role of a Naagin in 1989’s Nache Nagin Gali Gali. It also starred Nitish Bharadwaj, Satyendra Kapoor, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Suhas Joshi to name a few.

Rekha

Rekha played the role of Champa in the 1990 film, Sheshnaag. It stars Jeetendra, Rishi Kapoor, Rekha, Madhavi, Mandakini in the lead roles and music composed by Laxmikant–Pyarelal.

Kalpana Iyer

Kalpana Iyer played the role of a mother snake on the big screen in Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla starrer Tum Mere Ho.

Manisha Koirala

Manisha Koirala played the role of a snake in Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahaani. It had an ensemble cast, including Sunny Deol, Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Aftab Shivdasani, Sharad Kapoor, Sonu Nigam, Arshad Warsi, Aditya Pancholi and Raj Babbar. Manisha Koirala and Armaan Kohli played the lead antagonist in the film. The masses have trolled the film heavily.

Mallika Sherawat

Mallika Sherawat played the role of a shape-shifting snake in Hisss, also known as Nagin: The Snake Woman in 2010. It was one of the most controversial films of 2010 and Mallika’s makeup as a naagin piqued everyone.

Shraddha Kapoor

Shraddha Kapoor is all set to be the new Naagin of the silver screen. The shape-shifting snake film is said to be a trilogy that will be bankrolled by Nikhil Dwivedi. Vishal Furia will be taking the director’s seat. Hitherto, Sridevi, Hema Malini and Rekha have turned shape-shifting snakes on the silver screen. Shraddha seems pretty excited about being a part of the film. Shraddha said in a statement, It’s an absolute delight for me to play a naagin on screen. I have grown up watching, admiring and idolising Sridevi ma’am’s Nagina and Nigahen and always wanted to play a similar role rooted in Indian traditional folklore. It’s like playing an iconic character, which has always been so fascinating for the audience.
