Kate Garraway’s worrying update on frail husband Derek Draper’s health

Kate Garraway updates everyone on her husband’s health

Kate Garraway has admitted she’s still battling for husband Derek Draper, as she ominously warned the long Covid sufferer “isn’t doing great”.

Talking at Sunday’s Pride of Britain Awards, the heartbroken 56-year-old divulged to Metro: “He’s not doing great, to be honest, but the battle goes on.”

Derek was placed into a medically induced coma back in early 2020, but years on, he is still suffering long-term complications that have left him frail and on occasion close to death.

He now requires full-time care on the ground floor of the London home he shares with Kate and their two children and has been in and out of hospital with kidney and liver damage, sepsis, and even brain inflammation.

In despair, Kate revealed she’d managed to get in touch with health secretary Steve Barclay due to her plea live on air for a meeting with him.

During a video call, she tearfully told him: “I’d like to come and talk to you – not about Derek by the way, this is not me trying to get something for him.

“This is about representing millions of people across the country who, like me, in one hand feel like they’re holding the life of their loved one and in the other hand punching away at a system and it isn’t about money.”

Meanwhile, she shared her fear that Derek could die at any time in an interview with Good Housekeeping.

“I’d love to be able to tell you that, since Derek has been home, everything has been easy, that the miracle of him being at home has turned the day-to-day challenges into a breeze,” she sighed.

“But because we keep having emergency setbacks and he’s had to be rushed back into hospital so many times, the fear of him dying has never left us.”

It’s been almost 20 years since Derek and Kate first tied the knot, and they are parents to 17-year-old daughter Darcey and 14-year-old son William.

However, no one could have bargained for how badly affected Derek would become after catching Covid.

The life that he lives now is virtually unrecognisable in comparison to his busy past as a political advisor, author and psychotherapist, and he is wheelchair bound.

Kate has been so anxious over her husband’s health deterioration that she was even admitted to a hospital ward herself after collapsing in the A&E department due to suffering chest pains caused by stress.

She managed a courageous smile at the Pride of Britain Awards last week, wearing a purple high waisted satin skirt paired with a pink blouse.

The unusual combo, which she accessorised with purple shoes, attracted plenty of attention and praise as she enjoyed a rare moment away from the Good Morning Britain studio.

While Derek is gravely ill, Kate has never stopped hoping that her husband will one day make a recovery.
