Shahid Kapoor’s Kabir Singh is the talk of the town and how! The Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial has proven to be a huge spinner at the box office. The intense love drama has not only become a rage amongst cine goers but it also has fans hailing Shahid for his career-best performance in the remake of the hit Telugu film Arjun Reddy, which starred Arjun Deverakonda. Even fan clubs down South have appreciated Shahid’s unique portrayal of the angst and grief of a heartbroken but alcoholic, cocaine snorting surgeon.

Having said that, one can’t ignore the flak it has received from critics and critical thinkers who have flagged it as highly problematic. In fact, the buzz is strong on social media about the same and how triggering it is especially for women who have undergone abuse. And while Shahid Kapoor or the makers haven’t issued any clarification yet, our timelines are flooded about the same. And now, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s niece and actress Sharmin Segal who is all set to debut with Malaal, has given her two cents about the same. Comparing the character of Preeti played by Kiara Advani from Kabir Singh to her own character Aastha in Malaal, the starlet told News 18, “There is strength in Aastha’s silence in Malaal on some level, which I did not see in Kabir Singh. The second she let him slap her…”

“That was the moment when I was like why, why… With the amount of stuff that is going on in our country, where women are trying to get empowered… I liked Kiara Advani in the film as an actor. She gave her performance. Shahid Kapoor exceeded his performance. I really liked Shahid in the movie but the story did not sit with me. It made me cringe at points.” So that’s that.

If you have missed the memo, Kabir Singh narrates the story of Kabir (Shahid), a young final year medical student who falls in love with Preeti, his junior in college. Kiara essays the role of a simple college girl Preeti in the film. Kabir Singh is a remake of the popular Telugu movie Arjun Reddy that originally starred Vijay Deverakonda and Shalini Pandey. Meanwhile, Malaal is a love story between Shiva played by Meezaan Jaffery and Astha (Sharmin), who are two different people belonging to contrasting backgrounds but who experience the innocence of love. It is a struggle between their love for each other and who they really are. The film was initially supposed to release on June 28 but is now hitting the silver screens on July 5.
