This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield came out as gay in a lengthy statement on his Instagram page back in February of last year. Over a year later, the ITV favourite spoke candidly about his decision to address his sexuality live on-air.
The 59-year-old has since reflected on the candid moment in which Phillip was inundated with support from viewers and colleagues including Holly Willoughby.
In a new joint interview with his co-star, the pair addressed their BAFTA TV nomination where he touched on his announcement.
Phillip explained that the coronavirus pandemic had such a big impact on the nation and as he spoke about his “personal struggles”.
“I think what’s important is that you realise that, in the space of a year, just how big other things can be – look what we’ve all gone through as a nation,” he explained.
“There are much, much bigger things in the world than our own personal struggles.”
Phillip came out as gay via a statement posted on one of his Instagram stories and followed up in an interview on This Morning, stating that “with the strength and support of my wife and my daughters, I have been coming to terms with the fact that I am gay”.
At the time he received the full support of his wife Stephanie and their two daughters Molly, 28, and Ruby, 25, explaining how his family and their love had helped him through his torment.
And Phillip also thanked TV wife Holly Willoughby for her support during his time of emotional turmoil.
Twelve months on Phillip is still one of the nation’s most loved presenters and has been making progress with his life since coming out.
Just days following the This Morning presenter’s announcement coronavirus became headline news and when the pandemic struck.
Phillip locked down with the rest of his family at their home in Oxon.
Meanwhile, his co-star Holly opened up about working on This Morning for over a decade alongside Phillip.

She added to the same publication: “When I started, I was terrified. I only ever felt comfortable in cookery and fashion – I was so scared of asking important questions for fear of looking stupid.
“I was quite young and I think some people were questioning whether I was the right person for the job. Luckily, Phil believed in me from the get-go.”
Meanwhile, Phillip appeared to be enjoying the easing of lockdown restrictions as he headed to lunch with Andi Peters.
The This Morning duo were excited as they “finally” got to sit down for a meal together and have a long-awaited catch up.
Phillip shared the snap on his Instagram story, writing: “Finally! A proper catch up with @andipeters,” thanking the restaurant for their delicious meal.
The pair posed up for a second snap together, as the silver fox grabbed a selfie at the table.
Andi unveiling his super fit physique comes after reports that he was in the running for a promotion after Piers Morgan’s exit from Good Morning Britain.
