Piers Morgan will no longer be on our screens for the rest of the summer as he has revealed he will be taking a break from Good Morning Britain.

The outspoken TV host, 55, confirmed he and co-host Susanna Reid will interview close pal and fellow GMB presenter Kate Garraway on Wednesday 8 July so she can share an update on her husband, before retiring for the summer holidays.

Usually the main achors of ITV's GMB, This Morning and Lorraine are replaced during the school holidays with stand-ins taking over the role for the six-week term break.

Speaking on Monday's GMB Piers explained that they would be talking to Kate, 53, about her husband Derek Draper, who had recently woken up from his coma following his battle with coronavirus.

But the host added it wouldn't be as positive as first believed because while Derek, 52, has been woken from his induced coma by doctors, he still remains in intensive care and doctors have warned Kate that the real damage from COVID-19 is still uncertain.

"We're going to talk to Kate on Wednesday before we go off for the summer," Piers said.

"She's going to have something more to say about this but it's certainly premature at the moment to think that Derek isn't in any way out of the woods, sadly, on this and he remains in a very serious critical condition."

After announcing that he and Susanna would be chatting to Kate, Piers added further clarification on Derek's situation and what the GMB presenter would be discussing.

The father of four started: "A few papers doing coverage on our colleague and friend Kate Garraway today and the situation involving her husband Derek.

"And it's probably not quite as positive a story as the papers perhaps believe and so we've got a little clarification from Kate's representatives."

He then went on to read the statement: "These headlines make some level of optimism that might not yet be justified. We hope, as does Kate, that there will be more evidence of a recovery. But it will be a very slow and uncertain path."

Susanna added: "And we send them our very, very best, obviously."

Piers has been sharing updates on Kate's situation with her husband Derek, regularly sending his love and support via social media and during his hosting stint on GMB.

Earlier this month Piers spoke about Kate and the two children she shares with Derek, Darcey, 14, and ten year old Billy, and how they were "living in hope" while waiting for him to regain consciousness.

While speaking to a nurse who managed to beat the coronavirus after being in intensive care for 93 days during a previous episode of the ITV daytime show, he said: "We have obviously one of our own, Kate Garraway, whose husband is in a terrible position.

"We wish them, as always, all the very best. But they're living in hope," he continued, before addressing the nurse once more by adding: "And you're giving them hope because you've been through it."
