Princess Charlotte poised to get special royal title more unique than Duchess

Princess Charlotte is the only daughter to the future King and Queen, Prince William and Kate Middleton which means that based on her place in the line of succession, Charlotte could be looking at a prestigious royal title in later years.

When her father the Duke of Cambridge, 39, becomes King, Charlotte being the daughter of the King, could be in line to inherit a specific title to reflect this.

The six year old could be given the title in the future of The Princess Royal to reflect that she is the eldest daughter of the British Sovereign.

The title itself came about in the 1600s and derived from the French royal title of Madame Royale.

Royal expert Duncan Larcombe told “The title of Princess Royal is traditionally bestowed on the eldest daughter of the monarch.

"It is a title that remains for life, so Princess Charlotte will have to wait at least until the death of the current Princess Royal."

The Queen and Prince Philip’s only daughter Princess Anne is the current Princess Royal and was awarded the title by her mother in 1987.

The title is bestowed by the monarch and does not have to be given but is often given to the eldest daughter of the current monarch.

As the title is given for life, Charlotte would not be eligible to receive it until after the death of Princess Anne.

Aside from this unique title the young Princess could receive, Charlotte would also be in line for a new royal title when she marries – but she would still be eligible for the Princess Royal title whether she marries or not.

The discretion of royal titles is entirely with the reigning monarch and in recent years female members of the Royal Family were not given a Duchess title – with the Queen’s sister Princess Margaret being one.

Margaret and her husband Antony Armstrong-Jones were made the Earl and Countess of Snowdon rather than Duke and Duchess.

Therefore, any title Charlotte receives once William is King will be at his discretion and he could decide to give her a title in her own right.

The young princess was recently reported to be set to inherit one of Princess Diana's “favourite” heirlooms.

Charlotte is in line to inherit the late royal's “favourite” tiara that she wore on her wedding day to Prince Charles.

The Spencer tiara has been in the family since the 1930s, and it's believed that the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be the next owner.
