Sir Tom Jones was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to music at Buckingham Palace 16 years ago. And now, the singer, who turned 81 this week, has shared his initial concerns over the appointment.
The Delilah hitmaker admitted he was worried that he would need to “straighten up” and “change his ways” in order to receive the accolade.
At the time the decision was being made, he had already been appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
He was presented with the honour during a ceremony in 1998.
Tom shared his concerns when asked what it was like to be knighted.
He told AV Club that it was his biggest achievement to date.
Tom said: “When they said, ‘You’re being considered for knighthood,’ I thought, ‘My god, do I have to change anything?
“‘Do I have to change my ways? Have I got to straighten up?’
“I didn’t know what that means. So it was a little difficult to accept the fact that it was happening,” he told the publication.
Tom recently made history as the oldest artist to have a number one in the UK album chart.
He did it with his latest release Surrounded By Time.
The Welsh star beat the previous record which was held by Bob Dylan.
Last year, he topped the charts with Rough and Rowdy Ways at the age of 79.

He is joined by co-star Anne-Marie for his stint on the Channel 4 show, much to the delight of fans.
Tom told fans that they’d had “such a laugh” together, when he shared a picture of the pair on Twitter, in view of his 597,800 followers.
“Wow!!! cannot wait. This will be fun, more Tom on TV,”(sic) one follower remarked in the comment section of the post.
“I hope you have a random outburst of song in the middle of this lol,”(sic) another added.
Another fan was impressed by his energy and zest for life.
