Awareness march planned for World Population Day

Will stress on importance of family planning

World Population Day will be observed with various programmes by the Health and Family Welfare Services Department on Thursday.

The focal theme is "Adopting family planning for maintaining Mother & Child Health".

According to a statement from the department, the annual observance undertaken globally seeks to shine a light on the need for population stabilisation.

India’s population has crossed 121 crore, and given the current rate of growth, the population of India is expected to surpass that of China by the year 2028.

Family planning, which helps freeing women from the incessant cycle of pregnancy, breastfeeding and childcare, is a critical element of reproductive health, women’s empowerment and economic development, the department note said.

It has been acknowledged to play an effective role in the betterment of health of the mother and child, apart from population stabilisation.

The department has organised an awareness rally involving students from 20 colleges from the Bharathidasan Thidal to the Gandhi Thidal.

Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy, Health Minister Malladi Krishna Rao, K. Lakshminarayanan, Parliamentary Secretary to the CM, are among the dignitaries slated to participate.
