As it is its wont, the GoI grandly announced that Indians in the 18 to 44 age-group could get the COVID-19 vaccine from May 1.
This announcement came just as the states confronted a serious shortage of vaccines.
For millions of India’s 18 to 44 year olds, getting a vaccine appointment is a daily nightmare. It may be easier for them to crack Taniyama’s Problems — one of mathematics’ unsolved problems — than get an appointment on the COWIN site.
In Mumbai, for instance, vaccination slots for 18 to 44 year olds are gone literally in 60 seconds! On Tuesday, May 11, Maharashtra temporarily halted the vaccination of 18-44 year olds.
The frustrating experience prompted the social media observation that by the time an 18 year old gets a vaccination appointment, s/he will be 44!
If the Modi government wants to keep India’s youth on its side, it needs to solve the Vaccine Shortage ASAP.
