Congress MP from Idukki Dean Kuriakose's request comes on the heels of the suicide of Ananya Kumari Alex, the first transgender radio jockey of the state last month.
CONGRESS MP from Idukki Dean Kuriakose has written to the Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Virendra Kumar, requesting the setting up of dedicated cells in selected government medical colleges in every state to conduct sex reassignment surgery as well as psychological care of transgender persons seeking this particular surgery.
The Kerala MP’s request comes on the heels of the suicide of Ananya Kumari Alex, the first transgender radio jockey of the state last month. Also the first transgender candidate in Kerala to contest in an assembly election, Alex reportedly faced various post-surgery complications.
In his letter, Kuriakose said, “I am writing this letter to bring to your attention the plight of lakhs of transgenders across the country, who live in perpetual agony. The recent tragic death by suicide of a transgender activist from Kerala is reflecting badly on our collective conscience. Ms. Anannya Kumari Alex was a brilliant social activist and an accomplished media personality. She was a beacon of hope to people from the community who wished to make it big in society. However, her sex reassignment surgery was not a success and she had to suffer from complications that limited the quality of her life.’’
Apart from dedicated cells in hospitals, the MP demanded that the government ensure that “all surgeries are conducted according to the Standards of Care (SOC) developed by WPATH to make these surgeries more effective and humane”. He also demanded that the government direct all educational institutions, especially medical colleges, to incorporate SOGIESC (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression and Sex Characteristics) guidelines as part of the curriculum to promote inclusion in society.
Kuriakose told The Indian Express that the minister has informed him that he has sought a report on the issue from the Kerala
government, which he is yet to receive.
