27-year-old illustrator Malvika Jey, who has three solo shows coming up, explains how creating something new can inspire people to delve deeper into their minds
Art can work as a spiritual force.
For Malvika Jey, 27, it’s swimming into the abyss of her mind, and still deeper, to recover old truths and uncover new ones.
Being imaginative comes from childhood nurturing, and, for Malvika, illustrating won over her other child-like interests.
I would describe her as a visionary artist, who has a spiritual equation with her craft. It’s her alignment of creative energies that heighten her sensibilities. From her work and how she describes it, one can’t help but feel a depth of emotion and story unravelling, much like a song if it were presented on canvas.
“The fuel to my creativity is music. Without it, I don’t think I can tap into my [creative] core,” she says.
Malvika paints while being surrounded by music in her studio by the sea. Her choice of lifestyle led by self taught arts is what inspires her to create.
From seeing her body of work, I can’t help but feel a meditative energy backing every piece. It’s an expedition of mind and brush that patiently traverses the cosmos. When asked about what is essential to every piece she creates, she replies that she doesn’t plan her paintings.
Rather, she uses intuition to guide her brush and thoughts.
“Tapping into one’s deepest intuitions and inventing new styles, saying new stories, creating impossible moments through paint, and then exposing them to the world gives a new level of freedom,” she says.
She believes that this is the evolution for every creative soul because creating something completely new and unknown can inspire others to take a soul searching leap into the depths of their own mind.
Malvika states that she is not a writer, but a dreamer who paints.
Her mix media piece titled ‘Adapting to the quantum, And letting reality speak for its itself’ finds words in a poem written by Rabindranath Tagore that goes, “I feel this pang inside — Is it my soul trying to break out, Or the world’s soul trying to break in? My mind trembles with the shimmering leaves. My heart sings with the touch of sunlight. My life is glad to be floating with all things. Into the blue of space and the dark of time.”
The words prescribe to her emotions and resonates with the essence of the art.
‘Make art your life’, a mix media work bears an emotional narration, one that is close to her heart and soul. ‘Inside the mind of maalz’ is yet another piece from her 2019 collection that speaks about reality and the emergence of the human spirit.
“They don’t tell you growing up is a lot tougher than you think. But so are you,” says Malvika. She is restless, and her work is making appearances both nationally and overseas. Her upcoming solo shows will be held at Singapore (June), Bengaluru (August) and Moscow (October).
