Oppn. takes credit for keeping BJP at bay

The United Democratic Front (UDF) on Monday said the political line it adopted on the Sabarimala issue was responsible for keeping the Bharatiya Janata Party at bay, preventing it from winning a single seat in the Lok Sabha elections in the State and that the Left Democratic Front did not have any role in it.

The UDF liaison committee, in a resolution passed at its meeting which reviewed the Lok Sabha election results, said the historic victory was made possible by the electorate which firmly believed in secular values.

Clear warning

“The poll outcome was a clear warning from the people of the State to the fascist and communal rule under the Narendra Modi government and the divisive and lacklustre rule of the Pinarayi Vijayan government. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the BJP tried to divide Kerala society on the basis of religion and caste just to make political gains. The UDF defeated these moves by lining up the people. The election result was a loud proclamation that Kerala soil was not fertile for religious fascism and political fascism,” the resolution said.

Golden opportunity

The State government provided a golden opportunity to the BJP on the Sabarimala issue and strengthen it and weaken democratic forces.

The people who firmly believed in secular values could see through the BJP’s and CPI(M)’ s dubious stance and delivered a verdict that rejected their positions and attempts to convert Sabarimala into a battlefield, it said.

Addressing a press conference here, Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala, accompanied by a battery of UDF leaders, said the Sabarimala issue and the persistent attack on minority communities had played an important role in the UDF’s victory.
