Public Accounts Committee Chairman S. Durai Murugan on Wednesday said the district administration and Corporation should ensure that a committee including the constituency’s MLAs was formed to keep track of implementation of various schemes.
He was speaking to the press after a review meeting conducted at the Collectorate here and inspection of developmental schemes in the district. The committee consisted of MLAs M. Geetha (Krishnarayapuram), P.T.R. Palanivel Thiagarajan (Madurai Central), A.M. Mohamed Abubucker (Kadayanallur), K. P. P. Baskar (Namakkal) and T. Udhayasuriyan (Sankarapuram).
Commenting on senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram facing arrest in INX media case, he said the former union finance minister was well equipped to handle the case as he was a lawyer himself. “He has dealt with people who have done far worse crimes. He can handle the case.”
Mr. Murugan, who also spoke on smart city mission-related developments in the city said: “Only elected representatives will be able to analyse and understand the needs of the people in their area. It is important to keep them informed”.
The district was not functioning in a deplorable condition, but required tweaking as many projects were not on schedule. Improvement was a necessity though. “We have discussed the performance of some officials, but have not taken severe action against them,” he said.
He added that he would discuss with Collector T.S. Rajasekar about the need to clean inlet channels leading to various temple tanks in the city.
DMK MLA P. Moorthy, Corporation Commissioner S. Visakan, Additional Collector S. P. Amrith, Assistant Collector (Training) Jyoti Sharma and Deputy Collector (Training) M. Kokila took part in the meeting along with official representatives from all government departments.
