Shooting star

A known name in wedding photography circles in Hyderabad, Siddhu Soma wants to mentor emerging photographers

It isn’t easy to carve your own niche in an arena which is chock-a-block with staggering talent and innovation. But then, Siddhu Soma has managed to stand out in the highly competitive world of wedding photography thanks to his innate flair for novelty and ability to think out of the box.

From fancy locations to inventive props, his candid pictures for pre-wedding shoots have it all, ensuring that he ticks off the exhaustive check-list required for a modern day wedding. “I started photography when I was still in college, over a decade ago,” shares the 28-year-old and adds, “I learnt everything on the go, hence I can adapt to any situation easily.”

Starting off by entering photography competitions as a teenager, he has captured nearly 500 weddings in the last decade. He was also the official photographer for the IPL team, Deccan Chargers (now renamed as Sunrisers Hyderabad) for a while and got social media attention when he did an eclectic new born shoot for actor Allu Arjun’s son.

Siddhu also did the pre-wedding shoot for his own marriage and grins, “I’m not easily satisfied. So, for my own wedding shoot we went to Ladakh on our bikes for 11 days. Though it involved a lot of running around in setting up the camera, I was glad that I could fulfil my expectations.”

The photographer was talked about in Hyderabad recently for conducting wedding shoots on his iPhone in many locations, including Charminar and Paigah Tombs. “Many people believe that it’s the camera and not the person behind the camera, that matters.” He opines adding, “You don’t judge pictures based on their pixels. Photography is not only about quality but also about being in the moment. I wanted to showcase the skill of the person wielding the camera and show that if the photographer is talented then he/she can take amazing pictures even from a basic point and shoot camera.”

A firm believer in sticking to his own style and not following trends, Siddhu says that it is important to not blindly follow popular styles in order to stand out. “I always stick to what I know best — to try and showcase the chemistry between couples. I don’t try too hard to recreate artificial moments but catch couples in the moment.”

A photographer’s life is a portmanteau of stories and Siddhu’s is no different. From concept shoots in Dubai on a camera with a dying battery to weaving a story for childhood friends by clicking images at their school, college and coffee haunts, he tries to make every shoot different by tapping his subject’s personal stories.

However, Siddhu does admit that sometimes couples come to him with referral pictures which they want him to recreate which he tries to distinguish by adding his own touch.

Siddhu recently started clicking images of new born babies under the brand Little Vows and confesses that his aim is to retire from photography in 10 years. “I want to establish myself as an artiste, travel and explore other facets of life; that’s the dream.”

Currently heading a team of 15, he also hopes to mentor young photographers, something he says he sorely lacked when he started out in his teens.
