A woman has revealed how she discovered she was born without a vaginal opening.

Sydney Bean, 24, from Idaho, told KIIS FM’s The Kyle and Jackie O show on Monday, she discovered she had microperforate hymen – where the hymen covers almost the entire opening to your vagina – after trying to use a tampon.

‘It’s not as obvious as one might expect especially when you’re a baby,’ Sydney told hosts Kyle Sandilands or Jackie O Henderson.

Sydney said she underwent a hymenectomy, a surgical procedure to open or remove the hymen.

‘I had surgery at 17. It was extremely painful. It took me about a week to recover,’ she explained.

Kyle then asked Sydney about her love life, adding: ‘When you found love later on in life, have they commented on it?’

‘They wouldn’t notice unless I say something but I always say something,’ she said.

‘I bring it up on the first date… It’s a funny story and I like to be very upfront about my body.’

She continued: ‘I am intersex and there are other things about my body that are not male or female.’

Sydney said she has a heightened levels of androgens, which are usually thought of as male hormones, even though small amounts are also produced in the female body.

Intersex is an umbrella term used to describe a person who is born with genitals, chromosomes, or reproductive organs that don’t fit into a male/female sex binary.

I’ve been a lot happier with myself because I can understand why my body is the way that it is,’ she said.

‘I wish people would understand that it’s not bizarre to be intersex.
